About Ghana Cocoa Board
The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) is a government-controlled institution established in 1947, primarily responsible for the development of Ghana's cocoa industry. It regulates and supports the production, marketing, and processing of cocoa, ensuring the sector's growth and sustainability. COCOBOD operates through two main sectors: the pre-harvest sector, which includes research, seed production, and disease control, and the post-harvest sector, which focuses on quality assurance and marketing. The board sets producer prices to protect farmers, issues licenses for cocoa purchasing, and manages the export of cocoa beans. Ghana's cocoa sector significantly contributes to the economy, generating around $2 billion in foreign exchange annually and employing approximately 800,000 farm families. COCOBOD is currently implementing strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing productivity and competitiveness in the cocoa sector, including programs for artificial pollination, mass pruning, and fertilizer use.
